The Broken Hearts of Memorial Day

I always think it is ironic that the solemn holiday of Memorial Day has turned into the joyous celebration of the beginning of summer. Right now schools are on their last day, some are already done, and a few others will continue into next week. But Memorial Day is identified as the beginning of summer, opening the lake house, camping, and outdoor activities. Let us not forget some people only look upon this day with sadness and a broken heart. For those families who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, the loss of a loved one who was defending our country, I mourn along with you. God mourns with you.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed." (Psalm 3:18)

"The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring the good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim the captive will be released and the prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord's favor has come,.." (Isaiah 61:1-2a)

God mourns with us and he knows how you feel. His heart breaks continually. Although his pain comes from rejection, the result is the same. When we reject God, we are lost, we are dead to him and he mourns the same as a mother who lost her son in battle. The pain he feels is real and that is why the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. Here is what I read in Ezekiel this morning:

"But I will let a few people escape destruction, and they will be scattered among the nations of the world. Then when they are exiled among the nations, they will remember me. They will recognize how hurt I am by their unfaithful hearts and lustful eyes that long for their idols." (Ezekiel 6:8-9)

Then Jesus felt that same rejection, loss, and mourning.

"But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep. 'How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes." (Luke 19:41-42)

There are many in our country who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. They have given it all to save some.

Please, on this Memorial Day weekend, while you are enjoying your lake, your picnic, your camping trip, and time with your family, remember the fallen. Remember the fallen who have made it all possible.

Jesus gave his life for you just like the soldier. He gave his life that you might live, not just to enjoy a three-day weekend. He gave his life for you so that you could enjoy eternity with him. You just have to accept that free gift and it is with you forever.

Celebrate Memorial Day by accepting God's free gift of salvation!
