The Reverend….

I have been referred to as “Reverend Rhoades” by a very small group of people. When I was given this label for the first time it somehow made me very uncomfortable. In all sincerity, I am not worthy of this elite title. I have heard some describe it as more of an adjective indicating that I revere God and honor him. If it was used in that way, I might be a little less uncomfortable. I think most people, though, think of this prefix as a title, revering, respecting, and honoring a person who has dedicated themselves to preaching the gospel of Jesus. It is a humble honor is someone calls me Pastor Steve, Pastor Rhoades, or Reverend Rhoades. I just really prefer to be called Steve. All I really want is to be known as a SERVANT of the God of the Universe.

The label reverend was first used in 15th century and became popularly used for the clergy in the 17th century. So it has been around a while. The term is never used for clergy in the Bible, nor do we even hear of “elders” being given a formal title. In my circles the term reverend or even pastor has fallen out of use. I’m glad. Most comments I have read from pastors is that they really shy away from labels. Please understand, it is an honor to serve the Lord as leader of a fellowship of believers and if someone calls me Pastor or even Reverend, I take no offense. It just isn’t necessary and I do not want to even hint at a level of greatness beyond just being a servant of the Lord.

I think Pastors or Reverends are much more sensitive to being placed on pedestals. I think that is a good attitude to take in light of this scripture:

“Beware of teaches of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets. Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious  by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be severely punished .” (Matthew 20:46-47)

Pastors wanting to demonstrate their humility as a servant of the Lord is a good thing. Pastors seem to be working a lot harder to show their humanness and their vulnerability. Separation between Pastor and church member is smaller today than it ever has been. Another good comparison to being called Reverend it the clothing Pastors wear while preaching.

My Dad preached in a robe. I remember my grandfather always preached in a suit and tie. Now pastors wear jeans. Being a little old fashioned, I do not like preaching in jeans. I have done it, but my regular attire is khaki pants and a nice dress shirt. I want to show at least some level of respect for the honor I have been given. I do not deserve to be chosen to lead a flock. Every day I am completely amazed at why God chose me. So as a message to the Lord, I dress a little more formally when preaching. It is just my little private message to my Lord and Savior for the privilege of being chosen to share His word.
