When you need a Recommendation….

I have filled out many job applications in my life. I wish I would have kept all my previous resumes. They would tell quite the story of my life. I remember in high school we had to make resumes. It was awkward because you had no history of former jobs, you had no real education, you had no degrees or honors, or awards. I remember we were told just to make stuff up. Like I said, it was a bit awkward.

I remember one of the more difficult tasks was supplying references and getting letters of recommendation. It might just be me, but asking someone to write you a recommendation is a little uncomfortable. I always ask people that know me well. These people have seen me at my best and they can talk about that, the contributions I made, and the strength of my character. BUT, they COULD also talk about my weaknesses, those moments when I wasn’t at my best. When you are asking for a letter of recommendation you don’t want THOSE things included, just the good stuff. LOL!

I was reading John chapters 14 through 17 this morning. In these pages Jesus is nearing the end of his ministry here on earth and he is sharing a good-bye of sorts. He mentions, several times, about the ADVOCATE coming to be with us.

“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.” (John 14:15-17)

“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative — that is the Holy Spirit — he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” (John 14:26)

This advocate comforts, guides, teaches, supports and stands up for us. This advocate is like the ultimate letter of recommendation. And when we appear before the judgment at the end of our days, this advocate is going to forget all the bad, the sin of our lives, and report only the good. We are going to appear righteous before God because the advocate speaks for us.

“My dear children I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But, if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.” (1 John 2:1-2)

I am so grateful to have God by my side and the Holy Spirit testifying on my behalf. The Father knows me, his representative knows me and writes a glowing recommendation for me, regardless of my failures, my weakness, and the sin in my life! I praise God for his love, his patience, and his everlasting support for me. The Lord Jesus is the ultimate recommendation. He is the ultimate advocate, protecter, provider, and defender. Thank you Lord!
