Major Controversy! LOL!
My life is changed forever.
Yes, I have been changed by Jesus, but today I am talking about something a little bit lighter. I just learned that most of the things I believed as a kid are NOT TRUE. As I was reading 1 Timothy 4 today, I came across a term that I hadn't thought about for a while:
"Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly." (1 Timothy 4:7, NLT)
I hadn't thought about "old wives tales" for a while. First I was curious how this little phrase originated. It seems the phrase first came about in the first translation of the King James Bible. The better translation is "myth's fit for an old woman." Don't judge me, I didn't write it. I was trying to think of some of the more popular wives tales.
In order to be an OLD WIVES TALES it must be something many people believe is true that is not true. A good example that used to KILL me as a kid was waiting an hour before you go swimming. When I visited my aunt & uncle's lake cottage, that was the longest hour of my life. Science has proven there is no basis for this statement, it just isn't true. That completely changes my life! LOL!
Here are some other OLD WIVES TALES that are not true, debunked by science:
If you swallow chewing gum it stays in your stomach for seven years - FALSE!
Coffee stunts your growth - FALSE! (Then why am I so short. LOL!)
Cracking your knuckles can cause arthritis - FALSE! (I can't crack my knuckles, I have tried!)
Eating Carrots gives you better eyesight - FALSE! (I have eaten a lot of carrots in my life, my eyes are terrible)
The Five Second Rule - FALSE! (That's a killer. Science says the germs transfer immediately! YIKES!)
We eat eight spiders a year in our sleep - FALSE! (This makes me feel a lot better! LOL!)
Sitting too close to TV Ruins Your Eyes! (REALLY?!)
But, one of the greatest problems in the early church persists today, FALSE TEACHING! We have to be so cautious about what we accept to be true BIBLICALLY. I was confronted by a man last week that said, JESUS was NOT God, he was the SON of GOD. This man said he would not attend our church if I taught Jesus as God. He meant this with all sincerity. But, he does not have a grasp of the concept of God the FATHER, God the SON, and God the HOLY SPIRIT. I have to admit the concept of the Trinity is not easy to grasp. But the best explanation is this: "Calling JESUS the SON of GOD, is more of a description of his relationship to GOD the Father. John 3:16 verifies that Jesus is God's Son:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him will have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
But, Jesus is also God:
"For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body." (Colossians 2:9, NLT)
John also makes it clear that JESUS and GOD are ONE.
"The Father and I are one." (John 10:30, NLT)
Of course the opening of John's gospel also confirms God and Jesus are one.
Just like an OLD WIVE'S TALE, false teaching still exists today and with the advvent of the internet, it is so easy for people to fall prey to belief about God that is just not true. Guard your hearts, develop trusted and reliable resources, and PRIMARILY use the BIBLE as your foundation.
