Good to the Last Drop!
Do you remember the commercial for Maxwell House Coffee with the slogan "GOOD TO THE LAST DROP?" I learned something about that slogan today. It is often attributed to Teddy Roosevelt when he visited THE MAXWELL HOUSE in Nashville, Tennessee. It seems this establishment had a very unique blend of coffee and he visited there. He allegedly coined that term and it was used with the COFFEE as there main marketing slogan for years. BUT, I did not realize they were NOT the first to use that slogan. Actually, CocaCola used that saying for their drinks first. But, when we hear this quaint slogan we almost always associate it with COFFEE.
I thought about this bit of trivia this morning as I was reading John 15:9-11 in the NIV translation:
"As the father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete." (John 15:9-11, NIV)
The thing that caught my eye is verse 11. where it says my JOY MAY BE COMPLETE. Nearly every translation of scripture treats this short phrase differently. The NLT say that "your joy will overflow." The ESV and the KJV says that "your joy may be full." The NASB says that "your joy may be made full." The MSG says "that your joy might be fully mature."
It seems there is such a wide range of interpretations. So when I looked into the original greek, the definition for "pleroo" that caught my attention was "to fill to the top so that nothing shall be wanting to full measure, to fill to the brim, to the last drop."
The picture I get in my head is of someone loving and adoring coffee so much that they meticulously fill their cup to the very, very top, so that they can enjoy the very LAST DROP of that cup of Coffee.
THAT IS THE KIND OF JOY we get when we are obedient and committed to following the will of our Father in Heaven. Don't all of us have the desire to acquire every ounce of joy in our lives. Aren't we all seeking the LAST DROP OF JOY?
As we get ready to head into the final week before CHRISTMAS 2025, I am praying that each and every one of you will experience the JOY of JESUS CHRIST, squeezing the very last drop out of his HOPE, PEACE, LOVE, and JOY. It is a choice we make when we choose the JOY of JESUS. I want you all to FULLY EXPERIENCE him, to choose Him, not just during this Christmas season, but during each of the 365 days of the year ahead. I want you to experience the FULLNESS of JOY only found through JESUS.
Heavenly Father, we are so thankful for the GIFT of YOUR SON. To borrow a famous movie phrase, "HE is the gift that keeps on giving!" And that is very true. We praise you for his eternal gift of love and life. Please help us to be obedient, remaining in your love, throughout this season and the year ahead. Let us squeeze every last drop of your love as we await your final coming! PRAISE GOD! AMEN!
How can we FILL OUR CUPS of JOY to the BRIM with God's love, hope, and peace during this holiday season?
