Has Easter Faded?
I have heard the Sunday after Easter called "Let Down Sunday." That saddens my heart. But, it can be true. Many churches in America are full two Sundays a year, Easter Sunday and Christmas Sunday. So the Sunday after those two significant days can be quite the let down from the large corporate worship gatherings on those two days.
How quickly does the message of Easter and HOLY WEEK fade from your memory? I have asked people the day after I preached a sermon what it was about and RARELY do they remember, even within 24 hours. I pray every week as I sit in the sanctuary, before people arrive, that the message that day will transform the hearts of men and women that attend that day. I pray the church will rise up and seek God like they never have before. If I preach a thousand Sundays that will be my cry.
It doesn't matter when I preach or what my primary scripture is for the day. The message is the same, "Repent, accept forgiveness because of the Cross, and commit to Him!" I pray that message will never fade.
I was reading Mark 15 which records the crucifixion. These verses stuck out for me today:
"At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o'clock. Then at three o'clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, 'Eloi' Eloi' lema sabacthani?' which means 'My God, My God, why have you abandoned me?'" (Mark 15:33-34, NLT)
"Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he died, he exclaimed, 'This man truly was the Son of God!'" (Mark 15:37-39, NLT)
I don't memorize much scripture, but I know, "My God, My God, why have you abandoned me?" It is through hearing those words that I am strangely assured that God will NEVER ABANDON ME. That message is always alive in my heart. That message should NEVER BE FORGOTTEN, THAT is the message of EASTER that should NEVER FADE.
There is no let down in Easter. All of heaven rejoiced on the day of resurrection. Death was defeated and the King is alive!
Heavenly Father, I cannot say it enough -- thank you for the sacrifice on the cross. Thank you for the salvation you provide through your defeat of our last enemy. I love you Lord and lift my Voice to Worship You. Thank you Lord for the enduring message of the cross, that we can be assured of our salvation through you. Amen!
