Let people help me?
Our country was built on a group of people that were strong-willed and highly indepedent. In a few weeks we will even be celebrating INDEPENDENCE DAY! But, being completely independent is not a good thing and I am the worst. I RARELY like to seek or accept help from anyone. "I can do it on my own!" is my motto. That is not Biblical!
When Stephanie and I were considering going into missionary work across the ocean, we took some FUNDRAISING TRAINING. One of the things that I hate more than asking for help is ASKING FOR MONEY! I am not good at it! I do not like to do it! I avoid it like the plague! One of the biggest complaints of non-believers is that churches just want your money. Now that I serve in full-time ministry, I understand the need to ask. Doing MINISTRY IS EXPENSIVE. Through that training I learned that when we do not ask or do not accept help, we are depriving others of blessing and joy. I recently had someone hand me a check for a job I already got paid for. I protested and was ready to hand it back. That is when I remembered my training. I accepted it graciously. It was not easy.
This is what I read in Luke today;
"Whenever you enter someone's home, first say, 'May God's peace be on this house. If those who live there are peaceful, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you. Don't move around from home to home. Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide. Don't hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve their pay." (Luke 10:5-7, NLT)
Jesus gave instructions to the people he sent to accept the gift of hospitality and when they stayed in someone's home they were DEPENDENT upon their host. We are also supposed to be willing to accept the gifts and hospitality given to us.
Our sense of independence gets in the way of our deeper relationship with God. God wants us to rely upon him. He wants us to be dependent upon him. We say we are. We give that thought lip service but in actuality we constantly attempt to live ON OUR OWN, WITHOUT GOD being involved, except on Sundays. That is not how God designed this life. We are designed to be in relationship with the Father, having a deep walk and a heart that is completely dependent on him.
ARE YOU COMPLETELY DEPENDENT UPON GOD?
Heavenly Father, forgive me for my independence. Forgive me for the attitude that I will only call upon you when I am in desperate need. Help me to be completely, unapologetically, dependent upon you. You are such a GOOD FATHER and I know you desire to lavish gifts upon us if only we become fully dependent upon you. Thank you, Lord, for your infinite generosity and all that you do for us. Amen!
