It's not about ME!

 

The world is filled with some pretty arrogant people. Competition drives us to build bigger and bigger buildings, fancier and fancier homes and earn more and more money. We live in a time and a culture where life is all about ME. Although there are many who outright REJECT GOD and don't even believe in him, I would really say the majority of people don't even give God a second thought. They only think of this life and their own place in the world. 

This ME'ISM culture started way back in the book of Genesis. Today I was reading about the Tower of Babel. As a kid I was taught that the people who built the tower were trying to be like God, to reach up to him. But that is just not the case:

"They began saying to each other, 'Let's make bricks and harden them with fire.' (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.) Then they said, 'Come, let's build a great city for ourseves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.'" (Genesis 11:3-4, NLT)

They didn't give God a second thought. It might have been better if they were trying to build a tower to reach to God. Drawing closer to God could be a good thing. No, they were trying to gain fame. They wanted to look good. They were trying to build a monument to themselves. We do that today every day. We are trying to BUILD MONUMENTS TO OURSELVES. 

So the question is, WHY DID GOD decide to SCATTER them? The answer is simple. Look back into Genesis 9:1 --

"Then God blessed Noah and his sons and told them, 'Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth." (Genesis 9:1, NLT)

It really is no different than when Eve disobeyed and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. These people building the tower were defying God in pure disobedience. But it was the worst kind of disobedience. They were completely ignoring God. When they were deciding to build this monument to themselves, God wasn't even a single thought. He was just NOTHING. Somehow through the generations after Noah, they had completely forgotten about GOD and the message to fill the earth had been lost. It was all about ME and nothing about GOD.

I think that is exactly what happens today. MOST PEOPLE in this world are not abandoning God. They just don't even give him a single thought. The reverence of the Creator of All Things isn't even a passing thought in their minds. Our urgent task is to REMIND PEOPLE WHO GOD IS. We need to remind people that life is not about ourselves. Life is about GOD!

Heavenly Father, Forgive me for not doing a good job sharing who you are. Forgive me for letting this generation grow up without even thinking anything about you. We have failed. Please Lord help us to change that, to make sure the whole world knows the name of JESUS and what he did for us. Help us share your gospel message so that they can make a DECISION for you. Amen!
