Why don't I?

God has always taken care of me and my family. If you are like me, you can look back on your life and realize how much God has taken care of you. The blessings are unexplainable. I can give you a clear reason why.

I have been surrounded by people that have prayed for me. I know my grandparents sincerely prayed for me. My mom and dad prayed for me. I had pastors and youth leaders, when I was a kid, pray for me. I had faithful friends who prayed for me. I believe in the power of prayer. I believe God hears our prayers. Let me give you an example how that worked in scripture, at least for one man.

Abraham constantly prayed for Lot. He protected him. He rescued him from countless trial and pain. Lot did not deserve Abraham's prayers or the Lord's protection, just like we don't deserve the Lord's protection. Lot was just not that great of a person. But, Abraham never hesitated to seek Lot's rescue and salvation from the evil he lived in. God's messengers pull Lot back inside his home to protect him from the mob scene in Genesis 19. Then again a few verses later, Lot is dragged out of the city with his wife and daughters. God protected a reluctant Lot and much of that was at the behest of Abraham.

"At dawn the next morning the angels became insistent. 'Hurry' they said to Lot. Take your wife and your two daughters who are here. Get out right now or you will be swept away in the destruction of the city! When Lot still hesitated, the angels seized his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and rushed them to safety outside the city, for the Lord was merciful." (Genesis 19:15-16, NLT)

Do you feel the constant hesitation of Lot? If he was left to his own desires he would have stayed behind. If he was left to his own desires he would have stayed outside the door arguing with the MOB. That would have meant the death of Lot. Yet, he was still saved. He was rescued through the prayers of Abraham.

How often do we resist God's hand of protection over our lives? In all fairness, at the time we just don't see the destruction that surrounds us. We always think we can handle it. We might even justify the hesitation with some righteous purpose of saving others. Sometimes God just needs to yank us away from harm. Sometimes God just needs to overcome our hesitation by seizing our hands and pulling us to safety. I hesitate to guess the number of times God has protected me even in the midst of my protest. God knows what we need, he knows the future, the present, and the past. Why don't we trust him more? Why are we so reluctant to follow his guidance?

After Lot is rescued from the destruction God plans on taking him to the mountains. But Lot protests and he is taken to the small town of Zoar. But, in verse 30, we find out that Lot leaves this little city to head to the mountains. I have never noticed this before. God originally wanted to send Lot and his family to the mountains and he refused. But now 9 verses later, Lot wants to go the mountains because he was afraid of the people. Come on Lot, why don't you listen to God the first time. Why don't I?

Heavenly Father, open my eyes to all the good you have in store for me and my family. Drag me away from harm. Seize me to keep me from making bad choices. I need your protection and mostly I need that protection from myself. please Lord remain faithful and keep us safe! Amen!
